East Branch of the Penobscot

The East Branch of the Penobscot once carried the vast majority of the timber cut on the Allagash and West Branch of the Penobscot, to Bangor. Today, it is a seldom paddled river that traverses some of the most scenic terrirory in the Matagamon region. Accessible without any van transportation, as the river flows out ot Grand Lake Matagamon, the East Branch has numerous sets of whitewater that reqire significant scouting and care. Interspersed with areas of slower moving current, your guide will teach you all the necessary skills to safely negotiate the rapids. Portaging is included at no extra cost! The East Branch also offers tremendous fishing opportunities and the chance to try your hand at rump-bumping beneath the majestic Grand Pitch. The East Branch is ideal for groups including a hike of Mt. Katahdin in their itinerary or those looking for a mixture of a strenuous and relaxed trip.
