Katahdin Scout Reservation > Maine High Adventure Base > Mount Katahdin

Mount Katahdin is the highest mountain in Maine and the northern terminus of the
Appalachian Trail. The mountain is regarded by many as the most rugged and difficult
day-hike in the northeast. The rocky and craggy summit cone is reached after a substantial effort below treeline, where participants battle with roots and rocks and blazing the trail. Once leaving the trees, the climb begins in earnest, traversing nearly 2,000 feet in little over a mile. There is no easy trail on Mt. Katahdin, as they all require an exertion and effort that is unfounded on the majority of other comparable peaks. Once reaching the Table Lands however, leading to the summit, hikers are treated to views that are second to none As MHA participants look out over areas they have already paddled or are about to paddle, Mt. Katahdin is a perfect way to begin or end any trip. Challenging, rugged but rewarding
are all ways that past participants have described the hike to the summit. The only way to determine what Katahdin is to you, is to accept the challenge for yourself. It certainly comes with many rewards.
